Sarah Pizzo
Melia: I’m here with Sarah Pizzo; she just got second at the 2016 Kendall Mountain Runs. Congratulations.
Sarah: Thank you it’s a fun race.
M: This was your first time.
S: Yep, first Kendall Mountain Run.
M: Have you done other Sky Races before?
S: This is my first Sky Race but I have done other races in the region, all very challenging but hoping to do a few more Sky Races this year.
M: Now you want to get into it (SkyRunning) more.
S: It’s pretty fun, challenging. I like the combination of steep ups and steep downs. You need the full skill set for these races.
M: You seemed to have it all today.
S: It felt pretty good. One of my first big races of the year. I felt pretty pumped up for it. Decided to just run my own race and see what happened.
M: Was there any part that was difficult that you had to kind of push through?
S: Once we hit tree line and the oxygen thinned out I definitely felt way worse and more of a struggle. And the scramble at the top both ways was really challenging. That’s where Emelie (Forsberg) caught me; seemed to be her forte.
M: Was there a favorite part of the course that you experienced?
S: I would say getting near the top and looking out over the mountains. Seeing the views. That was a good motivation. It’s beautiful up there. You can see dozens or hundreds of miles makes the climb worth it.
M: A little reward before you run back down.
S: Definitely.
M: Have you been to Silverton before?
S: This is my first stop in Silverton. I have been to Lake City, Ouray, and Telluride. It’s kind of nice getting down here and explore.
M: And you live in Colorado.
S: Yep I’m a Denver native, born and raised.
M: And then, do you know what races you are going to do later on in the season?
S: I’d love to do the Rut; I’m not registered yet but hopefully the race director would let me do that. Make an exception and let me in. And also the Flagstaff (Sky) Race.
M: Awesome. We would love to see you out there. Congratulations again and enjoy the rest of your day in Silverton.
S: Thank you.
