Peter is truly Aravaipa’s handyman extraordinaire. Need to rig some new contraption? Peter has you covered! Sometimes I think he wishes he wasn’t at our staff meetings because inevitably someone will have a great new idea and I just turn a quizzical eye to Peter and he simply shrugs and takes on a new project. Beyond that he’s also an incredibly talented businessman and a mentor to our team. We’ve been so excited to witness his ‘comeback’ first hand.
My Bionic Recovery
On May 1, 2017 I became bionic. I underwent left hip replacement surgery. From that day forward my main focus was to regain my running activities.
Two months of physical therapy went well and I was on my way. The week of July 16, 2017 I was in Silverton Colorado where I tested my new hip for the first time hiking in the San Juan Mountains.
Back in Phoenix I walked 5 miles at the race “Vertigo” and 20 miles at the race “Jackrabbit Jubilee”. Some beach running followed in September.
I could tell at that point my rehab needed more time and pretty much did not run again until the race “Across the Years” (ATY). This is when I decided that my next major goal was “Crown King Scramble 50 K”. Let the training begin.
ATY was my kick off with accomplishing 100K over 5 days. January included a ½ marathon with assorted runs and rowing in between.
In February I started intense workouts including, mountain and speed work. March got more serious including a 15K race, 10 mile course run and 15 miles on Mount Ord.
Race day was March 24th. Pati and I ran most of it together. Race highlights included 13 min miles average for the first 15 miles, 18.69 min miles average for the last 16 miles 10:43 min mile average for the last 2 miles. This was my first 50 K, completing it in 8 hours 16 minutes, eleven months after surgery. Mission accomplished. Not bad for a 64 year old? What’s your next goal?
