A Race Riddled With Tradition Energetic rays of light flooded the town of Silverton this morning as nearly 300 runners towed the line of the 39th Kendall Mountain Run. As per tradition the race began in front of the Grand Imperial Hotel with the firing of a gun by Wiley Carmichael. He has ignited the race since the inaugural run 39 years ago. With the echoing bang the crowd of runners moved through the center street of town before ascending Kendall Mountain. During the race, runners experienced beautiful pines, breath taking views, and substantial elevation gain to the summit. Over 150 runners lined up on Saturday for the 36th Annual Kendall Mountain Run and 4th Annual “K2” Double. Both races start at 12th Street and Greene and follow the Kendall  Mountain Road 6 miles up to within 250 vertical feet of the 13,066 foot summit of Kendall. Runners then scramble up a steep trail to tag the summit marker before flying back down to town the way they came up. K2 Doublers make the ascent to the top twice for a little more than 24 miles. The 3rd edition of the McDowell Mountain Frenzy comes to McDowell Mountain Regional Park this weekend, taking place mainly on the “competitive track” mountain bike courses first built in 1998.  The competitive tracks feature rolling hills, narrow single track, banked turns, and several named “features” including “T-Bone Ridge” (the final climb in the 25 Km & 50 Km courses), “The Chunnel” (a horse tunnel/bridge featured in all races), “Double Dip” (two steep descents at the start of the race), and “Cactus Corner” (aid station on the far southwest corner of the 10 mile course).
