May 17 Important Update: Dear Steep Camp Runners, Here it is, the update you’ve potentially been anticipating but ultimately hoping you would never receive: It is with great sadness that I must inform you we have had to cancel the Sunrise Steep Camp race as currently planned. As all of you know, the health and safety of our community has been at the heart of every cancellation decision we have made. For those of you who are Arizona residents, it’s likely been on your radar that the Navajo Nation has been hit particularly hard by theCOVID-19 pandemic. Their southern neighbors, the White Mountain Apachecommunity, has also been hit hard and we simply do not feel justified in potentially putting their community further at risk for the sake of our goal of obtaining vertical gain. Running, for many of us, is a way to connect with the land, to give thanks for the world around us, the people around us, and our ability to challenge ourselves. We look forward to a time when we can return to the beauty of Sunrise Peak and Apache Peak, fill our lungs with the crisp mountain air, and share our gratitude with each other for making it to the other side of this. Until that time, we hope that you are able to find ways to creatively and safely stay motivated, challenge yourself, and push yourself beyond the limits you thought possible. With every day we wait, those first summits will only be sweeter when we are once again able to enjoy them.

NEW FOR 2020:
LONG Course and SHORT Course options for FIXED TIME Runners
Sunrise Ski Resort, Arizona
Embrace the Steep Life! Come escape the desert heat and enjoy a breath taking experience in the beautiul White Mountains.
If FIXED TIME is your jam, we've got two route options for you this year. We're bringing back last year's LONG Course loop, and introducing a new SHORT Course loop for 2020.
Tackle the LONG course loop, climbing peaks of 10,700 and 11,100ft. You'll cover just over 6 miles with each loop and gain aboiut 1,965 vertical feet.
If banking more "runnable" miles at altitude is your main focus, the new SHORT Course loop is just for you. You'll share pieces of the initial ascent and final descent with the LONG Course loop, but we'll cut you across the mountain about halfway to the top. The short course will have approximately 600ft of gain per loop, and cover about 3 miles. More details soon.
The fixed time event is a looped course, with a go as you please approach. If a few loops are all you need, come knock them out and stay to cheer on the runners trying to fit in multiple summits in a day. This event is sure to get your heart racing!
For those of you curious about fixed time events, but more interested in a fixed distance, we have a 10K and a 20K distance option. Get out on the course for one full loop of the LONG course with plenty of vert, or tackle two LONG course loops for your day and have twice the time to take in all of the views. Either way, we'd love to have you join us!
Online Registration for the 2020 event closes on Tuesday, June 2, at Midnight.

COURSE INFO
LONG Course:
Climb from the base of Sunrise mountain up to the peak at 10,700ft, catch your breath and enjoy a short descent, then climb again to the top of Apache peak,at 11,100ft. As you leave Apache and make your way back to the summit of Sunrise, you'll have the chance to high five other runners making their way to the summit. Then, wake up your quads and bomb down a different route from your ascent. Once you've made it back down to the base, to conclude your one and only loop, or to head out for more, we'll be ready for you with aid and encouragement.
SHORT Course:
Want to rack up the vertical gain, but with a little more focus on runnable miles? This year we're introducing the SHORT COURSE option. This new route will share pieces of the original LONG COURSE ascent and descent, but cut across the mountain at about the midway point. The elevation gains will still continue to stack up as you run loop after loop. We're excited to see folks embrace this new challenge for 2020. The course will be approximately 3 miles per loop, with approximately 600ft of gain per loop. Updated maps coming soon.
Aid Stations
There will be two aid stations along the course that are each accessed twice. They will feature water, gnarly hydrate electrolyte drinks, fresh fruit and other snacks.

RACE & COURSE HISTORY
Trail Running & Trash
Please respect the trails and the beauty of the land by disposing of any trash at one of our aid stations. Do not throw trash on the ground–runners caught littering will be disqualified. We ask that you practice “Leave No Trace” along the course to ensure the race continues for many years.
Cupless Race
In our continued effort to reduce our races footprint and preserve the trails we love, the 2019 Steep Camp Sunrise will be a cupless event.
What does that mean? There will be no paper cups at the aid stations at this race. Runners will be responsible for carrying their own container to refill along the way. UltrAspire reusable cups may be purchased with registration or on race day OR we encourage you to bring your own! Grab a cup, a hydration vest, pouch, or water bottle and we will fill it at each aid station along the way. We ask you to help us in our efforts by preparing for a cup free race day and thank you in advance for being good stewards of the trails!
Be Bear Aware!
As trail runners it is our duty to be aware of the risks, and respectful of the wildlife that call our playgrounds home. The Apache-Sitgreaves forest is black bear country, and we want all runners to be bear aware. More information will be provided in runner e-mails.
Race Timing
All runners will be provided with a race bib that must be worn at all times during the race. You will be checked in and out of all aid stations on the course. There will be chip timing at the finish line and your result will show up on the display screen.
