FUN FACT: Did you know... The Baby Bear 10K course is slightly short on purpose? It's short by one tenth of a mile so that the 50K distance isn't too long, or too short... It's just right! This was done during the first year of The Bear Chase in 2010, and runners called it the "Baby Bear 10K" at the finish line, and the the name stuck.

Additional Race Info
Runner Parking
Runners receive complementary entry to the park prior to the start of the race. (Crew, spectators and pacers arriving after the start will need a Daily or Annual Park Pass for entry.) Primary runner parking will be in the Swim Beach Overflow parking area to the East of the Start/Finish area. Please drive with caution at reduced speed as you approach this area. Park rangers will be in the area to enforce all park traffic rules and runners observed driving in an unsafe manner are subject to disqualification. Pre-race runner drop-off is allowed in the Meadowlark Cove parking area to the West of the Start/Finish area. (No long-term runner parking is allowed in this area.)
Crew, Spectator & Pacer Parking
Crew, spectators & pacers may park in the Meadowlark Cove parking area for short-term, or the primary runner parking area for long-term parking.
Accessibility Parking
Accessibility parking will be in Meadowlark Cove parking area (runner drop-off & short-term parking).
- All runners, crew, and spectators are expected to read and abide by the rules and guidelines.
- Runners must stay on designated marked trails at all times, unless nature calls. If you leave the course, you must return to the course at the same location.
- Runner bibs (worn right-side up on the front of the body, facing forward), and silicone bracelet must be visible throughout the race.
- Absolutely no littering, and practice "Leave No Trace" principles. All trash should be disposed of before leaving the aid station, otherwise must be carried to the next aid station or finish line.
- Crew support is only allowed at the Start/Finish area.
- Running with dogs is not permitted. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are allowed with crews and spectators.
- Be respectful of other trail users. Trails are open to public during the race. Follow standard trail etiquette: Pedestrians yield to horses, bikers yield to pedestrians.
- This race is CUP FREE! Runners must carry their own hydration system (bladder, bottles, reusable cup). We sell reusable, collapsable Aravaipa SpeedCups at packet pickup.
- Please be courteous to volunteers and staff. They are helping you succeed!
Medical support is provided by our partners at UC Health. The main medical tent is located at the Start/Finish area, and all aid stations will have basic first-aid supplies. Runners experiencing a medical emergency on course will need to go to the nearest aid station, or report the emergency to a passing runner. Medical evacuations will only be reserved for serious or critical medical needs such that the injured party can not physically move under their own ability.
99% of the course is run on dirt and crusher-fine trails (50K & 10K runners will run a short section on asphalt). Most of the course is smooth singletrack, but expect short sections of loose and rocky terrain with uneven surfaces. This terrain can be of a further challenge after sunset with limited to no light. All runners are required to carry a light source at the start of their last lap after 6:00pm. (100K runners must also carry one at the start, before sunrise.)
All runners are expected to be prepared for any weather condition and the race will continue on rain or shine. Race officials may make the decision to hold runners at aid stations in the event of imminent hazardous weather conditions such as severe lightning within proximity of the course. Runners will not be allowed to progress further until it has been determined safe to resume. Runners on course should take necessary safety precautions.
Runners and spectators are required to respect the wildlife by not approaching, feeding, or harming wildlife. Race participants observed violating this are subject to race disqualification.
Rattlesnakes are known to be on trails in the front range area. If encountered on the trail, do not approach and slowly back away, allowing the snake plenty of room. In most cases the snake will move along on its own. Do not attempt to move the snake with sticks or rocks. This will further antagonize the snake and increase its defensive posture. Slowly proceed forward after the snake has left the trail, listening for any indication the snake is nearby.
Unless otherwise stated, we will provide a 75% race credit on Ultrasignup towards a future Aravaipa Running event if notified in writing to info@aravaiparunning.com 30 days out from the event. If notified 5 days prior to the event, a 50% race credit may be provided in case of injury or family emergency. No race credit will be issued within 4 days of the event or after the event. Credits will be good for one year from date of issuance and can only be used once. If you withdraw from an event for which credits were used, you will not be reissued those credits. This reissuance policy also includes credits earned and used by volunteering. No cash refunds or transfers to another participant or event will be issued under any circumstance. No selling of entries is permitted. No refunds or credits will be provided for dropping down in race distance.
For any series options, there is no refund for missing one or more races in the series, whether notified before or after the event. For relay teams, no refunds, transfers, rollovers, or credits will be provided for withdrawal. Team members may be changed as specified by each event. Individuals who are pregnant are eligible to receive 100% race credit for the event that they must withdraw from. They will be granted two years from the date they reached out to use this credit before expiration.
For merchandise, tent rentals, or other add-ons (but not including the standard shirt or equivalent goodie), we will provide a 100% future race credit for the cost of the merchandise, tent rental, or other add-on on ultra signup up until we order the items. After we place the order, we cannot provide any refunds or credits. Race shirts may only be picked up in person at packet pickup or on race day, we cannot mail out shirts to participants that do not attend the event. We understand that issues arise at the last minute that can prevent a runner from arriving at the start line. We incur most costs early on in the planning process, and this policy represents our ability to reasonably provide something to runners who cannot attend, while keeping our entry fees low and quality high. If you have any questions about our policy, please email info@aravaiparunning.com.
Post Race
All runners will receive a finisher’s medal to commemorate their accomplishment.
Special podium awards will be given for top-3 overall finishers and age groups. A unique award will be given to the runner who BEARLY finishes! (DFL > DNF)
Celebrate your race at the finish line by enjoying a complementary meal freshly prepared by our friends at Food Truck Ave!
Serving: Saturday afternoon/evening - BBQ (vegan option available) with homemade chips. Sunday morning - breakfast burritos. Hungry crew, spectators and pacers may also purchase a meal.
Various refreshing drinks will be on ice including Breckenridge Brewery beer (21 and older, ID required), Bing Energy Drink, soft drinks and sparkling water.
Be sure to thank the dozens of volunteers who are supporting you to make your Bear Chase experience fantastic. If you have friends and family who would be interested in volunteering, please have them sign up at: https://aravaiparunning.ivolunteer.com/bc24
